Bustling with tourists and foreigners alike, the streets of Playa del Carmen come alive at night. It’s like someone flicked on the ‘fun’ switch after 7 p.m. The bright lights shine over the streets, countless numbers of party-goers dressed fancy getting ready to dance and turn-up, and loud music that makes you want to hop in the club and show off your amazing dance moves.
This strip that belongs to the Yucatan Peninsula is constructed to entice the tourists into Cancun’s modern, lively culture.
While it lacks the strict authentic lifestyle, it sure as hell invites cool and amazing locals. Furthermore, Playa del Carmen really hones the ability to offer fun activities for both tourists and locals to enjoy and have fun together as an interconnected community.
If there is one thing that I know about the local people in Cancun is that they love to party. I mean, who wouldn’t? This friendly community lives where the bars and nightclubs develop their own personality. Where there are places that permanently put a smile on your face and allow both communities to share laughs and experiences.
There are so many fun things to do in Playa del Carmen that guarantee special bonds.
While I have made a post about the 10 best places to visit to truly connect with the authentic Cancun, I realized that I would go in-depth and talk about the 3 things to do in Playa del Carmen that will generate joy and fun between you and the new locals you will meet.
Playa del Carmen – Centro & Playacar
This is my first recommendation for fun things to do in Playa del Carmen. The main boulevard, Avenue 5; the streets at night become a work of art. So much so that you can’t even focus on one thing to love. You have mariachi playing authentic music on one side of the street, and you have the strobing lights from a bar with hip-hop blasting. It’s so alluring that you feel the rhythm in your heart as your heart beats become aligned with the overwhelmingly fun music.
At the Playacar, it’s a bit calmer but still maintains its immense fun. What starts at the many narrow interconnected streets, ends in the same plaza where the entrance to the Playa de Mujeres is. There are families and couples hanging out at the small plaza where the families watch their kids play at the local playground in the plaza. Additionally, you have the wonderful beach with pristine waters that not only make the tropical fish happy but the locals who refresh themselves with the comfortable water.

With bars and clubs at almost every corner of the street, Avenue 5 in El Centro de Playa del Carmen is the hotspot to partying with locals and foreigners. Grab a drink at the nearest bar, or maybe grab a bite at one of the restaurants that flourish with locals here. The best way to really make a local friend is to buy a drink for them. This act of kindness can really introduce you to an interesting person.
The beautiful beaches that make up the Playacar are what makes meeting locals so easy. Just be yourself, and you will meet so many new people. I was just relaxing and soaking up the warm water, and this lady started talking to me. I was confused because I didn’t know who she was and I thought it was odd that she just blasted me with a whole conversation. When I asked if she was talking to me; she thought I was her son! LOL! Coincidence, I think not! I ended up talking to her son and her whole family!
Coco Bongo, Señor Frogs, etc.
Ah! This is where the drunk get drunker and Michael Jackson appears out of nowhere. Coco Bongo and Señor Frogs were rated the best clubs to have fun in Playa del Carmen by locals. With such a unique twist to normal clubs, people dress up as common movie characters and perform skits to entertain the party animals turning up on the dance floor. Floods of locals swarm around Boulevard Kukulcán looking for their favorite club. Meeting locals here has never been easier. Have a drink, relax, and let the vibe make you new local friends.

If you are young, or young at heart, attending some of these crazy, but insanely fun clubs are the way to embrace the party hood of the local lifestyle. Don’t be afraid to offer to buy someone’s drink because without a doubt they will appreciate it. That’s just one step closer to having a fun conversation with them. Ultimately, it’s a club! Fun resonates within the whole building!
When you think of Cancun, what comes to mind? White, pure sand that meets the turquoise water? Seeing an endless row of people sunbathing on the beach? People snorkeling looking down the crystal ocean water to spot the tropical fish, or maybe a lucky sea turtle? Well, you aren’t wrong!
Just as much as we, tourists, enjoy the tropical beaches, so do the locals that make Cancun the beautiful peninsula it is. Whether you are soaking up the sun at your hotel’s beach, or at a public beach, you will certainly meet locals.
How do I have fun?
Just be yourself! It’s the beach, and the chances that you will meet someone new is high. Entering the water is the best way to have fun with them because both of you will be doing fun activities that you can talk about. For example, I rode on a banana boat, and I met 3 cool locals who came to the hotel’s beach to ride on a banana boat. Definitely, water activities are the way to go.
There are endless activities to do in Cancun that can help with seeing the authentic culture, but there is also a side to that coin that lures in both communities to have fun in a more exciting and modern way. I hope that my information really helped pinpoint fun things to do with locals in Playa del Carmen.
