What’s the secret to becoming a local in Cancún?
It’s pretty simple, stay away from the touristy areas! Well, the answer is pretty blunt but there is more to that.
Becoming a local in Cancún is not as hard as you may think. The most famous districts known to the tourists are Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya, although there are many places that you are able to learn about the local life.
One of the biggest downsides about Cancún is they heavily enforce the presence of tourists. Since the land is so vast, you really feel like you can’t venture off on your own without a tour.
Luckily for you, I have found the solution to that problem of staying in touristy areas and, instead, travel like a local when you visit Cancún.
Talk to Taxi Drivers/Shopkeepers about the Local Life
This was the most effective way of finding locally known places in Cancún. While negotiating with a taxi driver about prices, we happened to carry a conversation about the local life.
After discussing, we managed to convince him to take us around to locally known spots. He was eager to show us around as well! So the next time you grab a ride, ask your driver for any suggestions on places to go to truly experience the authentic Mexican culture because they will happily help.
Surprisingly, that taxi driver helped me construct this blog post! Here are those places that locals are known to go!
Additionally, many of the shopkeepers are willing to help you get around Cancún. This is surprisingly convenient because after buying souvenirs for you or family members, you can ask the cashier or worker if they have any suggestions on where to go.
Visit the Villages Surrounding the Ruins
Visiting the villages that surround the gargantuan, ancient ruins of the Mayan people are truly unique and intriguing experiences.
This is a must if you want to learn and connect with the locals from Mayan descent. It’s not every day that you get to make a Mayan friend!
The feeling of connecting with the locals was just out of this world, for they truly care about their history and show it through their passion for taking the time to share their stories. As friendly as they are, you are able to bond with them on a personal and emotional level.
Engage in Local Pastimes
In my blog post, I share with you the top ten best places to visit to connect with the locals in Cancún. I recommend you head your way over to them because they give you access to activities that you can participate in as well as places to visit.
As though this is not really a ‘secret,’ many tourists don’t know how to step out of their comfort zone and converse with the locals.
And for this reason, engaging in local pastimes is an easier method to conversing with the locals. Not with words, but with actions. By adapting to their daily routines, you can easily approach them.
Why do you have the friends you have now?
Because you share things in common. You just need to relate to the locals.
Now you may be wondering,
“How does adapting to their daily routines really make it easier to talk to locals?”
The answer is that if you are able to implement their daily activities into your day, then you can mentally build the bridge of communicating with them. Since you are already participating in the same activities, talking to them will seem one large step away from hesitation.
Even through this method, it guarantees topics to talk about when bonding with the locals. Additionally, you and the locals in Cancún can build a relationship simply because you guys have the same interest.
