When visiting the Bahamas, it feels as if the world has slowed down and found its pace.
Nothing can go wrong.
However, inadvertently, we commit some of the biggest mistakes on our trip to the Bahamas.
And I have been there!
Relaxing and enjoying the beauty that the country has to offer with eyes full of joy and a heart full of adventure. It’s so easy for us to become susceptible to these mistakes without even knowing.
Here are the 5 biggest mistakes that you should avoid in the Bahamas but don’t!
5 Biggest Mistakes You Should Avoid in the Bahamas
1. Visiting by Cruise
One of the biggest mistakes that you can make is arriving in the Bahamas on a cruise ship.
When you arrive on a cruise, you miss out on a lot of the Bahamian experience. It’s an entirely different experience.
Typically, depending on what type of cruise you are in, you only have 2-days to really experience the Bahamas.
To be honest:
That’s not enough time!
There will be so much you guys will miss.
And while cruises may come with a lot of fun and memories on deck, you are going to miss out on the real fun centered in the heart of the Bahamas.
2. Staying in Your Hotel All Day
First of all, you should never do this! LOL.
Especially when you are in a foreign country.
And omg, I ALMOST made this freaking mistake.
For the first 3 days, I was in the house (I rented a house). I was actually pretty scared that I was going to fall in love with the beach right outside the door instead of actually going out to explore!
You can do activities at your hotel or do hotel things, but don’t let that be the pinnacle of your trip.
DON’T let that be the only thing you do on your trip.
Because the Bahamas is a country that can change your life with its culture and people.
3. ONLY Staying in New Providence (Nassau) & Paradise Island
There is a reason that this is considered one of the biggest mistakes you can make when visiting the Bahamas.
I mean, come on, it’s the Bahamas!!!
The Bahamas has so much to offer than the Atlantis hotel, the touristy restaurants that come with Paradise Island, and the famously visited island of Nassau.
Try visiting these islands as well:
- Grand Bahamas: Fishing & beaches
- Long Island: The most scenic island in the Bahamas & caves!
- Exuma: Swimming beach pigs!!! And fishing! Food and people.
4. Not Eating Traditional Bahamian Food
Surprisingly, the Bahamian food is the forgotten masterpiece in the Bahamas.
To be honest:
I’m completely amazed by their food.
They can make macaroni burst with flavor as they incorporate FOUR different types of cheeses. They fry fish and add the sauce that makes the fish crispy, yet moist because of the sauce which creates a wonderful blend of flavors and textures.
It’s like they are so good at blending flavors that a party breaks out in your mouth!
You must eat traditional Bahamian food, and not eating traditional cuisine is the worst mistake you can make in the Bahamas.
P.S. Conch fritters aren’t the only “traditional” food in the Bahamas. Explore!
Here are some traditional Bahamian dishes that you have to try:
- Seared Conch
- Conch Salad
- Grouper, or any fish.
- Baked Crab
- Pigeon Peas
- Macaroni and Cheese
- Guava Duff
5. NOT Talking to the Locals
From personal experience, this was my WORST mistake.
Every country I have been to was special and exhilarating for its scenery and attractions, but I had missed one thing.
What was it?
Talking to the locals.
That’s what completed my heart. And I’m glad I fixed my mistake.
Because had I not fixed it, I wouldn’t have made the many friends along my trips that have made that country so special to my heart.
It’s the people that can make the simplest experiences become the best experiences that can’t be replicated.
And in the Bahamas, the people are insanely friendly.
If you’re lost, they are there for you. If you are hungry, they will feed you, and if you are trying to have fun, they will have fun with you.
Truth be told:
The Bahamian people and their culture are full of vibrant colors that resonate with the flourishing life in the Bahamas as well as the happiness and joy that each and every Bahamian has in their hearts and souls.
At the end of the day, the Bahamas is full of right things.
Nothing can wrong in paradise, but there are definitely ways that you can enhance your vacation.
By not making these 5 mistakes in the Bahamas, you will surely find yourself in the arms and encapsulated by the warm gestures of the traditional and authentic Bahamian culture.
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
That’s a common mistake that we, as travelers, make pretty frequently.
Of course, it’s not on purpose.
We should be open to the amazing experiences and potential opportunities that traveling comes with.
Don’t come home feeling regretful, don’t come home with memories of only staying in your hotel, and don’t come home with memories that aren’t unique.
Have you made any of these mistakes during your travels in the Bahamas?
