During my travels, I have experienced some of the best things ever.
I just said one phrase.
And today, I’m going to share the one phrase that helped make my travels 100% better and how it can make your travels so much better.
So, what is that phrase that seems to produce such magic and pleasure?
This is it:
“Hi, I’m X. I’m looking to become a local! Can you help me?”
Just that one phrase.
But there is more to that.
The Power of That One Phrase
Throughout our lives, we say thousands and thousands of words.
Some with meaning and some day-to-day phrases.
However, those sentences or words that are meaningful can play a huge part in your life and the other person’s life.
And when you travel and say, “I’m looking to become a local in your city,” you spark something inside of that person that will show you how much that phrase impacted them.
Feelings of happiness, gratefulness, and appreciation will fill the space between you and the local.
But that begs the question:
Well, think about your recent vacation.
Were you just there to relax on that beach everyone talks about? Or maybe shopping down that famous street that city is known for? Or maybe doing an activity that you couldn’t leave without doing.
Why did I bring that up?
Because when we travel, we are subject to that big ass title of being a “tourist.”
And yes, it is normal, and yes, we are tourists.
But, think about how it is for the locals that call that place their home. They are constantly walking past tourists that flood their streets, yet hardly any contact is involved.
Now, think about when a tourist like ourselves approaches a local asking for their help to show them how we can become locals so that we can experience the true city.
They will be ecstatic!
Because they will be more than happy to show a foreigner how amazing their city can be!
I mean who wouldn’t love showing someone around their city and showing them the best time they have ever had?
Throughout all my experiences asking numerous locals how I can become one, I have experienced nothing but happiness and that warm welcoming feeling that you get when you see a family member.
The Only Downside
There is one downside to asking locals this question.
It may be obvious or it may not be as obvious.
Every person differs.
In personality, characteristics, and mentality.
When approaching locals, you may get the answer that we didn’t want.
And that’s, no.
But do not take it personally because there could be an endless amount of reasons as to why they declined your request.
- They could be busy.
- They may not have the time or the flexible schedule.
- They may not feel comfortable hanging out with a stranger.
- Or a personal reason you may not even know!
Don’t let their denied request make you feel discouraged or feel hopeless because there are millions and millions of people on this Earth that are willing to show you around their city.
Just approach everyone with a positive vibe and a smile!
I encourage you to use this phrase: “Hi, I’m X, and I’m looking to become a local in your city!”
You have no idea how many people will love to show you around, and before you know it, you will be making friends left and right.
I’ve used that phrase every time I step foot into a new country, and I never regretted it.
All I can say is that I wish I knew this before I stepped out into the world of traveling.
